Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What makes a great kitchen?
A. Great kitchens are more than cabinets and countertops. Of course, they look good, work well with your lifestyle and increase the value of your home, but a great kitchen doesn’t come from a box or a catalog. It comes from careful planning, budgeting and a choosing the right professionals. It should make you feel excited to be in it, work in it or just be there.

Q. How much does a whole new kitchen cost?
A. Room size, floor plan, product choices and labor all affect the costs. Structural changes such as removing walls or altering the existing space all contribute to the bottom line. You can keep the cost down by making affordable product choices or by doing some of the work yourself. See our “Process” for more information.

Q. Why do some professionals charge a fee for a design or estimate and others do not?
A. Determining the cost of the project is a process. Skipping steps in this process can be costly. A free estimate is merely a ballpark figure and more than likely will cost you more in the end. A free estimate will also limit the ideas. Small jobs involving a quick sketch and a few measurements are one thing. Larger, more complex projects require skill and time and a designer should be compensated accordingly. Professional designers bring a tremendous amount of experience and expertise to the project.

Q. What makes a kitchen more or less expensive?
A. Cabinets and counters account for approximately 1/3 the cost of the project and have the biggest impact on your budget. The price ranges are considerable based on quality, type of material used and the detail or intricacy of the workmanship. Quality pieces don’t have to come from the most expensive price points. A balance is what makes a valuable choice.

Q. How do I set a budget?
A. A good rule of thumb is to invest 20-25% of the total fair market value of your home in a kitchen project. If you spend less, you won’t meet potential buyers expectations. If you spend more, you are less likely to get your money back at resale. We can help you strike a balance between your budget (funds available) and your ideas.

Q. Can I do some of the work myself?
A. To keep some of the costs down, you might want to consider performing the demolition (tearing out the old cabinets, flooring, appliances, etc) and painting/wallpapering at the end of the project.

Q. There are so many different materials and brands of countertops – how do I decide which is best?
A. There are literally dozens of choices today. The primary consideration should be your cooking/entertaining needs, aesthetics and price points (not necessarily in that order). Click here for more information

Q. How long does it take to complete a kitchen remodel?
A. The main phases are design, shopping and construction. The design and product selections are very important. You’re entitled to take your time in making these very important decisions, but keep in mind that products cannot be ordered until final decisions are made. Lead time for cabinets can be 4-6 weeks or longer depending on the scope of the project. Once the products arrive, construction can typically take from two to eight weeks, depending on how ambitious the project is and how many “surprises” we encounter.

Q. Can you do the entire project?
A. Yes, we are a design/build firm. What this means for you is that from the design phase all the way through the entire project, we are with you to ensure a seamless , efficient and quality project.
